Two days and to many candidates to debate at the same time. A debate is four maybe six people at the same time. Everyone trying to make their point and no one in control.
What if I was a candidate?
These are some of the highlights that I heard in the debates that I would like to answer.
We should cancel taxes for corporations and anyone making less than $250k a year. For everyone else, the bill should be divided every year based on their assets.
We should look at critical products that should be made in America like medicine, electronics and everything that could compromise the country. This idea that we can’t trust Huawei phones but we can trust the iPhones made in Chinese factories is crazy.
Universities as we know it today needs to go away. They should be research institutions and the people should be paid as they are now. A bachelor's degree should be merged into high school. Public schools should be free and the parents should not be required to do fundraising and need to buy all the crazy things that schools require. Paper books should be optional and all school books should be electronic on a kindle. Let’s get rid of the 60lb child carrying 90lbs of books. Also, a book making minor changes should not be able to sell the book as a new book. As with health care and other nesesities, there should be a limit on the profits that can be made. We should also look at education models like Kahn academy where you learn the material and demonstrate that you know the material and you get some type of certification instead of a degree. We also need industry to step up and train their own employees and not expect the government to do all the work.
Insurance and Health Care
We should allow people to have insurance any way they want. What I see is rebuilding the VA hospital system. We could merge the VA system with other nonprofit hospital systems around the country to build a free healthcare system. If you want private hospitals and want to pay for insurance, good for you. For the rest, I would fix the VA hospital and start by taking anyone who had any type of military service. In phases, I would expand that to government works both state and federal. At any point, if there was extra capacity it would be open to all. It would also include military schools for doctors and nurses that would reduce the costs. We would also need to expand the mental health services that make up the major population of homeless people that have been in the military and we have abandoned. If you served the country we should be there for you.
We should limit drug prices and go after the industry for killing people. The drug companies that have created the opioid addiction problem should be charged with murder. All drugs should be produced in the United States and not all over the world. Any drugs that used government grants to be developed would be produced by the government and cost. We should also fix the patent systems that are causing these issues and others.
Breaking up high tech and big business
We should go back to the anti-trust laws that worked in the past. We should not allow companies to buy up competitors and put them out of business. By splitting up many of the biggest businesses it would create many jobs that were lost in consolidation. Companies that have conflicts of interest should be split to remove those issues. Many of the tech giants were created by the government. We should reveal why this was done and allow the public to make their own decision.
The drug problem is a mental health problem and needs to be looked at for what it is. Mental health is being ignored and at great cost. As part of the new health care system would be mental health care. It would use a balanced approach. It would be balanced with your beliefs to give you the best good.
The real solution to many of our problems is enforcement. We should use the laws we have to stop all crime and end the useless laws that imprison those with mental illnesses and addictions and deal with them directly. If businesses abuse people like in the opioid addiction we should use all the laws we have at our disposal to stop them. It also means we need to give the police the tools to feel safe so they don’t need to feel the need to kill. We also need a balanced approach that extends into states and local governments when needed but steps back and allows states to have the independence afforded to them in the constitution. The federal government should set the standard and go after criminal local governments but in most cases get out of the way. The federal government should help provide the money for roads with grants but the states should be responsible for the roads.
If you were not a criminal in your own country and have not harmed anyone in the United States you should be allowed to stay. After 5 years if you have a job and have paid your taxes you should be allowed to become a citizen if you want. Too many people think the current system is a big pie divided amongst us all and in reality, the pie only gets bigger with more people. We all benefit from immigration. Look at other dying countries where immigration has been restricted.
The bill of rights says arms not guns. In many ways, we have already lost the right. Gun control makes no real change in how people kill other people. The issues we have with mass shooting has all to do with mental health care and not guns. Just as subdivisions with HOA’s people love to control other people. My message to all of you: Eat your Kale and shut up. I wish that gun stores would feel comfortable to warn the police that something doesn’t look right and they should be like a bartender and not sell if they feel it’s a bad idea. I wish that everyone who buys a gun would be required to have a license and prove training before leaving with one. But again back to state's rights, this is not in the hands of the federal government. We should offer guidelines and maybe have requirements for national travel with your gun but if California wants to ban guns they have the right to. If you live in Texas don’t expect them to give in to a gun-free society any time soon. Having lived on a small farm in the countryside in Texas. I did not own a gun but understood why you might want to protect your livestock from predators.
We should be working on decriminalizing government. We need to get the government out of things they have no business being in. We should make every contractor an employee of the government to know what the real size of the government. For all industries, unless you have a job that is temporary of six months or less they should be an employee. Having the government pay a third party money is crazy and wasteful. We should stop the corporate welfare system. We should also do what we can to know what makes up the government and how we spend that tax money. Once the real numbers are known we could offer grants to people in the government to start businesses that would reduce the size of the government without putting people on the street. In the end, the government needs to do what is needed for all people, not special interests. Health care, clean water, safe food, safe medicine, and protection from criminals both local and aboard. The government would be smaller because we would stop doing useless things and get rid of privatization.
